10 Ways to get your baby into an optimal position for birth.
Jul 24, 2023
Getting your baby into the optimal position for birth is beneficial for a smoother labour and delivery. While it's ultimately up to your baby to find the best position, here are ten suggestions that may help encourage proper positioning before labour begins.
Maintain good posture
During pregnancy sit and stand with proper posture to create more space for your baby to settle into the ideal position. Avoid slouching and try to align your pelvis and spine.
Practice sitting on a birth ball
Sitting on a birth ball (exercise ball) can help open your pelvis and encourage your baby to move into an optimal position. Sit on a ball instead of a chair whenever possible.
Stay active
Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga, to encourage your baby to settle into the right position.
Use gravity
Spend time in positions that encourage your baby to move downward, such as kneeling, squatting, or leaning forward on your hands and knees. This can help your baby move into an optimal position.
Avoid reclining positions
Sitting or lying back in a reclined position compresses your pelvis and may encourage your baby to settle into a less favourable position. Opt for upright and forward positions instead.
Practice pelvic tilts
Perform pelvic tilting exercises to help align your pelvis and encourage your baby to move into an optimal position. Get on your hands and knees and gently rock your pelvis back and forth.
Spend time on all fours
Spending time on your hands and knees, also known as the "all fours" position, can help relieve pressure on your back and encourage your baby to move into a good position.
Try pelvic circles
While on all fours or sitting on an exercise ball or in a kneeling position, gently rotate your pelvis in circular motions. This movement can help loosen your pelvis and potentially facilitate proper positioning.
Avoid reclining positions for sleeping
When sleeping, try to avoid lying flat on your back, as this position can compress the vena cava (a major blood vessel) and potentially hinder optimal positioning. Instead, sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs for support.
Seek professional guidance
Consult with your healthcare provider or a certified doula who can provide personalized advice and exercises to encourage optimal fetal positioning based on your specific circumstances.
Remember, each pregnancy and baby is unique, and it's essential to discuss any concerns or questions you have with your healthcare provider. They can offer individualized guidance and support throughout your pregnancy journey.
